Lack of Information... Focusing on Things We Cannot Do...

Interestingly it is easy to find information about benefits of different  yoga moves or stretches & exercises in weight lifting & fitness in general... but not that much out about hooping moves.

My theory is that it is because of 1 reason: hoopers keep requesting tutorials! I got so many requests to create tutorials for all kinds of different moves: just had no time or energy left to share about their actual benefits. So many requests I still have to respond to, I will not live long enough to do it all...
How to...? How to...? never ask why???

Hoopers focus on things they cannot do, stuff they struggle with. I personally do not enjoy focusing on things I suck at. Yeah, I try & problem solve & work on things I am not yet good at... but I also try & celebrate the things I can do, I focus on my achievements & that way I don't feel like a failure but like a SUPERHUMAN. It is also great pleasure to notice changes in my body & mind. Both my anatomy ( my structure) & my physiology ( function & the way I move) are massively benefiting from focusing on little details of each move & trick. When I notice tension or the lack of it or experience strength gains or improvement in active range of motion: that feels the most precious out of it all. My agenda is not to built a list of hoop moves. I don't get wet about them all. I get wet about the ones that bring benefits.

At the end of the day: I hoop not to be able to do many tricks. I hoop to tame my body, to learn how to use all of its parts, to be a professional skilled user of this thing I live in. For me the toy is MY BODY & not the hoop. The hoop is a diagnostic tool that helps me find issues & areas where there is room for improvement & the hoop is also a tool for manipulating my body to get the most out of it. However boring this may sound but my interest originally came from studying Osteopathy & seeing a potential for holistic equilibrium in hooping. It wasn't flow arts, free love, group hugs & being one with the Universe. I came to hooping for the muscles, bones, ligaments, lymph flow, symmetry, erythema, adhesions...  

Why Bother with Tricks?

Short answer:
Tricks introduce variety into your workout - the more different things we do, the less likely we develop repetitive strain injuries.

Tricks make hula hooping a full body Holistic workout. If we just stand in one place & spin around the waist, we miss out - it overuses the same body parts & your body gets to figure out how to be very economical with it so you reach a plateau as well on top of your new overuse injury - applies to all sports!

A plateau is what we reach when our body gets used to what we are doing. We no longer burn many calories, we no longer get any sweet achy muscles that make us feel like we are doing something. Our body figures it out & we could hula hoop or run or sweat on an exercise bike or elliptical trainer 'til the cows go home: our body won't get leaner or better, just gets overused & that is when we develop repetitive strain injuries. Same story with every single sport where you keep doing the same: tennis elbow, runners' knees... lots of injuries get their names from the sport that oversuses the same body part. With hooping we are in luck: we have a huge variety of fun moves to try! So we can benefit if we actually do try them. Why not try?
